Possible locations

Opening scene - Road

Mousehold Lane
I took these photos in Mousehold Heath, we chose the location because of its ideal qualities for the opening shot. With several options on where to shoot at different parts on Mousehold Lane, the road would be an ideal option for the film and practicality on the day of the shoot. The wide open spaces around and behind where the main character, Edwood, would stand really give off the sense that he is actually quite free at this stage in the story. Whilst the fence, traffic and (bottom left) shrubbery give off a sense of the forces that are pressing down on him, just stopping him from being free. However, this location isn't all that practical logistically, Mousehold isn't a very convenient area to get to for most of our crew and cast. Seen as we are not offering transport for anyone, this location could prove difficult to get everyone there.

Anglia Square
Anglia square offers some fantastic elements for the opening shot and film as a whole. The surrounding area used to be a thriving working area but in years gone by has been partially abandoned and appears moderately grimy. These factors all work very well for the ambiance and general feeling for the film. Though, unlike Mousehold, the area only seemed to have one appropriate spot for the opening scene, it is absolutely ideal for its purpose. Also having the backdrop of graffiti and tall intimidating buildings works brilliantly to connote the pressures Edwood is feeling, there is still enough open space to show that he is free to move. There is also the edition of a fence to shoot from behind to implant the idea of imprisonment and entrapment. Anglia square is, logistically, a better option than Mousehold, it is near the city centre and easy for people to make their own way to and leave without any inconvenience.
We also considered both Thorpe Mariott and the Whiffler Road Industrial estate. Whilst both of these areas have elements that would work great in the opening scene, they lack character, variety and the vital enclosed, claustrophobic areas needed in later scenes.

Main & final scenes

Mousehold - Earth studios

This is where the final scene in our thriller will be shot, should we choose Mousehold. This location, particularly as you make your way into one of the bays and into a corner, is great for creating the claustrophobic effects needed in the final scene. Unfortunatly, this location is still very difficult for people to get to and could cause problems to do with transport.

Anglia square

If we choose to use Anglia square, these are likely spots that we would shoot the final scene in. These areas provide dark, enclosed and grimy visuals, perfect for what we are trying to achieve in the final scene. Again, unlike Mousehold, Anglia square is much easier for cast and crew to get to.

  1. These are well chosen locations, with effective photos and a strong discussion of each idea.

Are there any thrillers that use similar locations? Adding discussion of this to this blog post would strengthen the piece. Consider Lock Stock and Essex Boys and their use of unglamorous, industrial locations. Including stills of those films' locations and discussing the links/ similarities/ differences would strengthen this.
